CHARLES PORTAL (25 juin 1862 – 4 octobre 1936)
Charles Portal, archiviste, chartiste et historien, consacra sa vie à sa région. En tant qu'archiviste du Tarn, il accomplit un travail immense de recherches et de rédaction, qui aboutit à plus de 200 publications, d'une qualité toujours remarquable.
Il fut membre de plusieurs sociétés savantes et scientifiques et devint l'un des piliers de la Revue du Tarn, qui accueillait très régulièrement ses écrits.
Loveeux de Cordes-sur-Ciel, il rédigea sa monumentale Histoire de la ville de Cordes, et s'employa avec succès à faire classer plusieurs monuments et édifices de cette ville par l'intermédiaire de la Société des Amis du Vieux Cordes, qu'il fonda en 1904.
Enfin, il fonda en 1932 le musée d'histoire et d'architecture de Cordes, qui porte aujourd'hui son nom.
